Microsoft is betting that ChatGPT will make Bing useful
Microsoft's $10 billion
investment in OpenAI is already leading to ChatGPT integration for Bing and
Edge, with potentially major consequences. Microsoft has announced the first results of its
recent $10 billion investment in the OpenAI research lab. Its
long-ignored and often maligned search engine Bing is getting a makeover thanks
to the integration of ChatGPT, along with the company's Edge web browser. According to a presentation from Microsoft
headquarters on Tuesday, CEO Satya Nadella explained how the company's
revitalized Bing is set to provide a "new day" for Internet users. In
addition to a general retooling of how Bing search results are populated, users
will soon be able to leverage ChatGPT's conversational tone to help with more
complex tasks; Microsoft says it will generate travel itineraries, offer
ingredient substitutions for recipes, and list potential options for a product
as you shop — all while providing
relevant links. [Related: Google's Next AI Chatbot Relies on the
Power of Its Search Engine.] According to Microsoft, ChatGPT's ability to
produce often human-like responses, a concern in many fields and industries,
could soon also be harnessed to help write emails, prepare for job interviews,
and even plan a night out. New Bing. And edge. As showcased during the
company's public demo, the new integration comes in the form of traditional
search results alongside AI-assisted annotations or a separate chat window for
deeper conversations. The new and improved Bing is currently available via "limited
preview", with a full release in the near future. [Related: AI Scientists
Say ChatGPT Is Nothing Special.] The spectacular reboot of Microsoft's search engine
is just the latest in a series of major developments within the complex and
often controversial AI-generated chatbot industry. On Monday, Google announced
the imminent arrival of Bard, its intended rival to the Microsoft-backed
ChatGPT tool based in part on the company's (recently misunderstood) Lambda
service. Meanwhile, critics and pundits are urging everyone to curb the hype
surrounding these programs, citing concerns about effectiveness and accuracy. Even Microsoft's $10 billion investment in OpenAI
won't put an end to search engines. According to Tuesday's presentation,
ChatGPT's services will soon find their way into the company's product suite.
